Lucy Stone [1818-1893], with Alice Stone Blackwell [1857-1950], half-length portrait of a woman, seated, facing slightly right, holding baby, 1857 or 1858. American activists: Lucy Stone was an orator, abolitionist and suffragist, a vocal advocate of rights for women. She was the first woman from Massachusetts to earn a college degree, and spoke out against slavery. Stone was known for using her birth name after marriage. Her daughter Alice was also a campaigner for women's rights, an abolitionist, a socialist and a suffragist.
