Memorial Window Erected in St. Mary's Church, Chester, to Heroes of the 23rd Royal Welsh Fusiliers, 1856. 'This fine window has been designed and executed by Mr. George Hedgeland...in memory of the heroes...who fell in the Crimea from the victory of the Alma to the capture of Sebastopol. The principal subject represents Aaron and Hur holding up the hands of Moses during the battle between Israel and Amalek...The subject...occupies three of the five lights; the other two bear scrolls, with the mottoes "Ich dien," and "Nec Aspera terrent," from the colours of the regiment; from which also are taken the Prince of Wales' feathers, which are placed in the upper part of the window. The emblems of England and France - the rose and fleur de-lis - are repeated, alternately, in various parts of the window. The whole has been executed in the old style, no enamelled glass being employed'. From "Illustrated London News", 1856.
