Paris Fashions for May, 1856. 'Chapeau of white taffetas, with crisped feathers... Mantelet of white muslin...Robe en taffetas quadrillé...the skirt has five flounces, with round scallops...Straw hat, the passe covered with a network of fine velvet...Skirt of moiré antique, and an over corsage, fitting closely, of black or coloured velvet...Robe of gros de Naples...The corsage, closed in front, is ornamented with a ruche, which tails to the bottom of the waist...An écharpe mantelet covers the shoulders. Chapeau of white rice-straw, trimmed with flowers. Robe of barège, white ground, with garlands of maroon flowers. The corsage ajusté is ornamented with a round basquine, the edge of which is trimmed with three fringes...'. From "Illustrated London News", 1856.
