Inspection of the Royal Sappers and Miners at Brompton Barracks, Chatham, by Sir John Burgoyne, 1856. 'More than ordinary interest attached to the occasion, from the presence of Lieutenant-General Sir John Burgoyne, G.C.B., R.E., Inspector-General of Fortifications, who directed in person the military evolutions of the day. After reviewing the troops on the lines above St. Mary's, the whole of the Royal Corps of Engineers were paraded in the Barrack-square, Brompton; when their kits and accoutrements underwent a minute inspection by the gallant General, attended by his staff, Colonel Savage, and commanding officer. General Burgoyne expressed himself to the Colonel Commandant as being highly satisfied with the appearance and condition of this distinguished branch of the service'.
