The Dutch Folly Fort, Canton River - from a painting by a Chinese artist, 1857. Second Opium War. '...it was found necessary to proceed on the offensive. Accordingly, two mortars and three heavy guns having been placed in position on the Dutch Folly, a sharp shelling on the Governmental part of the city was kept up for several days. Two large fires occurred in the suburbs, destroying many hundred houses and very valuable property. Still, however, the Chinese obstinately refused to accede to our demands'.
