The arches are set in freestone which is damaged at the top, and reveal low stone walls directly behind them. Further in the background are more rows of arches both parallel and perpendicular to the front. The abbey was founded in 1132 by Cistercian monks and is one of the finest preserved abbeys. The main building took place between 1170-1247 and late 15th century to early 16th century. The abbey had many owners after the dissolution and is currently owned by the National Trust.
