The late Earl Stanhope, 1876. 'The Right Hon. Philip Henry Stanhope, fifth Earl Stanhope, Viscount Stanhope of Mahon, and Baron Stanhope of the Peerage of Great Britain...was for a short time - namely, from December, 1834, to August, 1835 - Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs in Sir Robert Peel's first Government...The late Earl was remarkable for his artistic tastes and literary ability, and was the originator of the National Portrait Gallery and some time president of the Literary Fund Association.
