The Expedition against the Malays of Perak: officers' quarters, Campong Boyah, 1876. Engraving after a sketch by Sub-Lieutenant Holme, of a British Army barracks. 'The outrage perpetrated by the Malays of Perak, in the Malay Peninsula, in the murder of Mr. J. J. Birch, the British Political Resident, has been punished by a military force...the combined English force took possession of Kinta, without loss...after a three days' severe march from Blanja, through twenty miles of jungle...there was no serious opposition...the Malays were quickly dislodged by guns and rockets...Ismail and Maharajah Lela fled...the insurgent Malays were driven from a position in a mountain pass, where they had strongly fortified themselves. This success was due to the gallantry and judgment of Captain Channer, who with a party of Ghoorkas surprised and took a stockade flanking the position'. From "Illustrated London News", 1876.
