The Prince of Wales Tiger-Shooting with Sir Jung Bahadoor: the Critical Moment, from a sketch by one of our special artists, 1876. The future King Edward VII in India. '...the reeds and grass were so high as to rise above the heads of those in the howdahs...and the head of the shooter, who stands upright in front on the floor of the howdah, is certainly 17 ft. above the ground...Except for the elephants no man could go into such a place at all...but elephants are apt to lose their presence of mind and dignity of deportment when they come upon tigers in a swamp...[after she was shot]...the tigress lay down with a few heaves of her striped sides and a growl which died into a moan, rolled over, and lay stark but not stiff, showing her fangs in her snarling mouth, indomitable in rage, hit through shoulder, head, and back'.
