Sketches in Madrid: the Water Supply of Madrid, 1876. British opinion being expressed as to the personal hygiene of foreigners. '...the ordinary aspects of life in Madrid. ..filling of casks by the public apparatus for water supply, to answer the demands of a dry and sun-burnt population. Their use, indeed, of water for the purposes of cleanliness is not extravagantly large. Melons and other pulpy fruit will also help to assuage thirst, even in a climate that is always either scorching hot or bleakly cold, but where a refreshing temperature is seldom or never felt'.
