He '...was educated at King's College, London, and Worcester College, Oxford. After leaving the University he went to Australia, where he remained for some years. He returned to this country in 1858. Since that period his best known works have appeared...In 1869 he became the editor of an Edinburgh newspaper, the Daily Review, the organ of the Scotch Free Church. While connected with that paper he visited the scene of the Franco-German War, and was present at the Battle of Sedan. He soon afterwards abandoned his connection with the newspaper press and returned to novel writing'. From "Illustrated London News", 1876.
