The prodigal son eats from the pigs trough, c.1540-c.1550. The son (Filius Prodigus) eats with the pigs from a trough, it says: Ferment of the Pharisees (Fermentum Pharisaeorum). around him are the mouth of hell (Infernus), death (Mors), the devil (Diabolus), despair (Desperatio) that is bitten by the conscience (Morsus Conscientia), disease (Morbus), hunger (Fames) and War (Bellum). In the sky a cloud from which two hands emerge, one with an orb, one with a whip. They symbolize God's punishment (Ultio Divina). In the landscape is the Synagogue of the Devil (Synagoga Sathana). Print from a series of six woodcuts with six-line Latin captions. The woodcut is hand-coloured where the costumes have been adjusted / modernized.
