The North Atlantic Telegraph - The Telegraph Expedition Company camping in Labrador, [Canada] 1860. 'The projected telegraph is to be laid into Hamilton's Inlet, latitude 54 deg. 30 min. N. The inlet is about 30 miles wide, and extends westward 140 miles. When Colonel Shaffner was examining the fitness of this place for the submerging of the telegraph, he anchored his ship at Brig Harbour, situated on the northern side, where there were a number of vessels, and some two hundred people engaged in fishing. From this place he went from time to time to examine the many islands and arms of the sea. It was late in September, but the weather was very mild, so much so, in fact, that at night a brush tent served as a sufficient shelter'. From "Illustrated London News", 1860.
