The Battle on the Volturno - battery where the Neapolitans burnt the wounded Garibaldians - from a sketch by T. Nast, 1860. War in Italy: scene showing '...a deed of abominable cruelty on the part of the Neapolitans...[who] piled up the dead and wounded; and if a poor fellow had strength to crawl out he was pushed back by the Neapolitan bayonets. There seems little doubt that the fight was marked by great ferocity...there is no end to the complaints of our soldiers that the Neapolitans killed our wounded. Several of them were found half burnt. Although we are no longer in Sicily, burning and plunder seem to be still the order of the day of the Neapolitan soldatesco. Not a farm building remains in the neighbourhood of Capua, and as the columns on Tuesday came down from the hills to Caserta they set fire to every village which lay on their road'.
