Légende
Ecce Homo, c1505-1515. After Christ had been beaten and mocked by the soldiers who crowned him with thorns and gave him a purple robe, Pilate brought him before the people and declared: "Ecce homo" (Behold the man!) (John 19:5). The reed had been given to Jesus as a mock scepter (Matthew 27:29). This devotional painting therefore communicates Christ's suffering and humiliation and urges the worshiper to meditate on the Lord's Passion.
