Officers and Privates of the London Rifle Volunteer Brigade, 1861. 'This distinguished volunteer corps, officially designated "1st City of London Rifle Volunteers," was originated by Captain George Montagu Hicks, late Captain in her Majesty's 41st Regiment, who, having secured the co-operation of several influential noblemen and gentlemen, first called for volunteers who should form a regiment worthy of the city of London by an advertisement, published in March, 1859...The brigade boasts of an admirably-drilled and numerous cadet corps, has a superb regimental band, and another consisting of forty amateurs. Besides the use of the Guildhall, the Corporation of the City has granted it an admirable parade-ground on the Surrey side of the Thames, and that great desideratum, a good rifle-range, will in a few weeks be added to the list of its advantages. The present number of effective members closely approaches 1500, besides the cadets and honorary members. The uniform is dark green, serge being worn in undress, with gaiters and a light forage-cap. The full dress is handsomely braided, and the shako mounted with a green cock's-feather plume'. From "Illustrated London News", 1861.
