General Lord Clyde, G.C.B., K.S.I., 1862. 'Lord Clyde...saw some active service with the 60th Rifles in the American War in 1814, his presence in that contest probably preventing his being at Waterloo...while serving [in the West Indies] he took part in quelling a slave insurrection in Demerara....Throughout the Punjaub campaigns of 1848-9 he commanded the third division of the army under Lord Gough...whilst Brigadier-General commanding the Peshawur districts, he was continually engaged in operations against the hill tribes...he...took the command of the Highland Brigade of the first division of our forces in the early part of the war in the Crimea...In 1858 he was raised to the peerage by the title of Baron Clyde, and a pension of £2000 a year was conferred upon him...When the order of knighthood the Star of India was created, Lord Clyde, of course, was placed amongst the first and chief recipients of the honour. He is also a Knight Grard Cross of the Sardinian Order of St. Maurice and St. Lazarus. Lord Clyde is unmarried, and there are no heirs presumptive to his titles'.
