The late Major-General the Hon. Robert Bruce, Governor to His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, 1862. Engraving from a photograph by John and Charles Watkins. Bruce was '...the second son of Thomas, seventh Earl of Elgin and eleventh Earl of Kincardine, K.C. (the collector of the Elgin marbles)...He entered the Grenadier Guards in 1830...He was private secretary to his brother, Lord Elgin, when that nobleman was Governor- General of Jamaica. In 1847 he was appointed Military Secretary and principal Aide-de-Camp to Lord Elgin, then Governor-General of Canada; and in 1855, after his return from British North America, he was made Surveyor-General of the Ordnance. In 1858 he was selected by her Majesty and the Prince Consort to be Governor to the Prince of Wales, a post which he has filled in the most admirable manner...General Bruce may be said to have lost his life in the service he had undertaken, for he never recovered his health after the fever he contracted while attending on the Prince of Wales during his tour in the East'.
