The International Exhibition: "Charles I. and his standard-bearer", in aluminium, exhibited by Bell and Co., 1862. 'The work which we engrave shows the application of the metal [ie aluminium] to statuary purposes, and represents a well-known incident in the life of Charles I. The pleasing cool grey of the metal renders it peculiarly suited to the purposes of art, and the equestrian statue which we figure shows the pleasant colour of the metal to great advantage. The horse is spirited and well formed, and the whole group is harmoniously composed and is full of expression, while the execution is of the most praiseworthy character. The texture of the horse, together with its soft and subdued lustre, is especially pleasing; and the judicious manner in which burnish and matting are employed adds much to the charm of the work. This beautiful work was made by Messrs. Elkington and Co. for the exhibitors, Messrs. Bell Brothers'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862.
