Satzuma's envoys paying the indemnity money at Yokohama for the murder of Mr. Richardson, 1864. 'This sketch was taken by our Artist in the office of the British Legation. Three of Satzuma's Envoys are talking about the operations at Kagosima with the consular officers, whilst two Chinamen (Shroffs) and five Japanese are counting the money'. The Namamugi incident was a political crisis that occurred in the Tokugawa Shogunate of Japan during the Bakumatsu (final years of the Edo period) on 14 September 1862. Charles Lennox Richardson, a British merchant, was killed by the armed retinue of Shimazu Hisamitsu, the regent of the Satsuma Domain, on a road in Namamugi near Kawasaki.
