Hay-makers, by J. Linnell, Sen., from the Exhibition of the Royal Academy, 1864. Engraving of a painting. 'We need hardly say that the landscape we have engraved is distinguished by characteristics of mature power which are never found in the works of a very young artist. As with all painters who have risen to eminence, Linnell's early landscapes are remarkable for careful realisation. All the details evince a keen eye and patient hand, informed and directed by an intellect thirsting to accumulate a larger number of distinct objective truths. Gradually there come a more general grasp, a more educated harmony, and with these the firm and confident execution of manhood. And then, as age creeps on and the hand begins to tire, mental and subjective qualities become more and more predominant...'. From "Illustrated London News", 1864.
