Légende
An old Dutch house at Cape Town, South Africa, 1864. 'The Dutch, who first colonised the "Land of the Hottentot" at the Cape of Good Hope, were fond of building large and substantial stone residences, and of surrounding them with avenues and shrubberies of oaks, pines, and other trees. Our Engraving shows one of these old-fashioned Dutch houses, in the suburbs of Cape Town, with the Table Mountain and part of the Devil's Hill in the background. In the front of the Engraving may be seen a group of native washerwomen, who are accustomed thus to do their work out of doors, beside any stream where they can get an unlimited supply of pure soft water. The Dutch gardens are well stocked with fruit-trees of all kinds, with trellised vines, oranges, pomegranate, and others peculiar to the South African clime'. From "Illustrated London News", 1864.
