Lübeck: the Cathedral, 1864. '...we turn to the Cathedral, a lofty building of red brick, and enter by the noble porch...We must not omit mention of a fresco, on the south side, which preserves the singular tradition that the cathedral was built by Henry the Lion on the very spot where he had caught a wonderful stag, let loose by Charlemagne 400 years previously, with a jewelled collar about its neck and a cross between its horns, and bearing this inscription: "Hoc Caesar me donabat".' From "Illustrated London News", 1864.
