Meeting of the British Association at Birmingham: the Priory Church, Malvern, 1865. '...the geologists...where they were received by Dr. Harvey B. Hall...The fine Gothic priory church was inspected, and its very rich and light architecture was much admired. The nave is in the Norman style, and the roof exquisitely ornamented; its florid Gothic central tower, 124 ft. high, is surmounted with battlements and pinnacles. Of the rest of the monastery, originally endowed by Edward the Confessor, the great gateway alone remains, a pure example of the Pointed style; and, considering its antiquity, is remarkable for retaining, in many places, its original freshness. Malvern was in the Saxon times a wilderness, thick set with trees; and, viewed from the north-east, the abbey church stands environed with graceful foliage'. From "Illustrated London News", 1865.
