'Dr. John Phillips...as secretary to the Yorkshire Philosophical Society, took a leading part, with Sir David Brewster and others, in establishing the British Association...[He] has held the office of Assistant General Secretary to that association since 1832...Being attached to the Geological Survey of Great Britain, under the direction of Sir Henry de la Beche, Mr. Phillips was for some time engaged in a laborious examination and description of the palaeozoic fossils of Cornwall, Devon, and West Somerset, published by authority of Government.
