Légende
A Fresh Gale - Mount Orgueil, Jersey, by E. Hayes, in the exhibition of the Society of British Artists, Suffolk-street, 1869. 'The artist whose picture we engrave, Mr. E. Hayes, is a marine-painter of very considerable and well-known ability. We therefore look first for marine effects in a work of his. Accordingly, we have here a forcible representation of the sea after a recent storm, the fury of which may be measured by the magnitude of the "swell'' which rolls in, aggravated by the check of the shallows, in the huge waves breaking along the rocks of the foreground and distance. A more terrible testimony to the force of the storm is afforded in the wrecked ship helplessly lying at the foot of the granite slope in the middle distance, against which it is dashing to pieces, but from which a life-boat is landing passengers and crew. An effective representation of the boldly picturesque Mont Orgueil, crowned with its castle and strong fortifications, closes the view on one side'. From "Illustrated London News", 1869.
