Embarkation of the body of the late Emperor Maximilian at Vera Cruz, Mexico, 1868. Engraving of a sketch by Lieutenant G. W. Osmond. 'The mortal remains of the ill-fated Austrian Prince, Ferdinand Maximilian, whose brief reign in Mexico terminated in his death inflicted by the victorious Republican party, were delivered up to Admiral Tegetthof, for conveyance to Europe...[The view shows] the Austrian frigate Novara, lying at Sacrificios, off Vera Cruz, and receiving the barge which brought the late Emperor's coffin, to be placed on board Admiral Tegetthof's flag-ship. The barge was draped in black cloth and displayed the national flag of Mexico; so did the two eight-oared galleys by which it was towed along...The hour was eight in the morning. The Novara also hoisted the Mexican ensign, which was placed half-mast high, as was likewise the British ensign of H.M.S. Niger. As the boats came past the Niger, her rigging was manned in token of respectful greeting; but a calm and solemn silence was observed throughout'. From "Illustrated London News", 1868.
