Funeral Procession of the late King of Bavaria at Nice: the cortége passing along the Promenade des Anglais, 1868. 'Prior to reigning, [Louis I. (Charles Augustus)] evinced little taste for political affairs, and devoted himself to the cultivation of the fine arts, living even parsimoniously to obtain the means of accumulating objects of virtu...On the death of his father, [in] 1825, he succeeded to the throne, and at first showed himself desirous to govern liberally. He, however, from 1830, pursued a reactionary policy. In 1846 he, when sixty years of age, became enamoured of the celebrated dancer Lola Montes. He created her Countess of Landsfeldt, and settled on her an income of about £5000 a year...After his retirement, the ex-King, though travelling now and then, fixed his permanent residence at Nice, and there he died'.
