Inspection of Troops at Aldershott by the Queen: cavalry trotting past, 1868. 'On the arrival of her Majesty [Queen Victoria] and Royal party on the parade-ground the troops gave a Royal salute, the colours being lowered and bands playing "God Save the Queen." Her Majesty was conducted over the ground by the Duke of Cambridge and Sir James Scarlett, and attended by a numerous staff. The Queen inspected the troops by passing down in front of each line, after which the Royal party took up a position at the saluting point, when the troops marched past...The marching of the different regiments and corps was performed with the greatest steadiness and precision. Her Majesty and the Royal party appeared highly gratified with the martial and soldierlike bearing of all the troops present...It began to rain rather sharply as the troops marched off the parade ground on their return to quarters'.
