Major-General Edward Charles Frome, Inspector-General of the Royal Engineers, 1868. Engraving from a photograph by John Watkins. 'The newly-appointed Inspector-General of Royal Engineers, and Director of Works for the War Office, who has succeeded Field-Marshal Sir John Burgoyne in those offices, is Major-General E. C. Frome, R.E. He entered the service in 1825, and was employed some years in Canada. Upon his return to this country he was appointed Instructor of Surveying and Practical Astronomy to the junior officers of the corps of Royal Engineers. He was subsequently engaged in special duties under the Colonial Office. He has held command of the Engineers successively in Scotland, Ireland, and Gibraltar, from which last station he was relieved after his promotion to the rank of a general officer. The date of his commission as Major-General is Jan. 5, 1864. He is an Associate of the Institute of Civil Engineers, and F.R.A.S.'. From "Illustrated London News", 1868.
