Memorial of the late Marquis of Waterford, 1869. Engraving from a photograph by Mr. J. Williams of an '...elegant fountain...at Ford, near Wooler, in Northumberland,...[erected] by the Marchioness of Waterford in remembrance of her husband, the third Marquis, who died in 1859...The monument consists of a large basin, about 5 ft. high, of freestone...From the centre of this basin rises a column, the basin of which, as seen above the water, is of light grey granite...The shaft standing on this base is of dark red Aberdeen granite, highly polished; the lower part of it is octagonal, and bears small shields upon four of its faces, whilst the upper part is cylindrical. The remaining portion of the monument is of Caen stone; it presents a foliated capital of exquisite workmanship, with the figure of an angel bearing a sword and heraldic shield (the supporter of the arms of the Waterford family) surmounting the column. The whole structure rises to the height of 34 ft. from the ground. Four spouts or jets fall into the basin, from which smaller jets are poured through ornamental lions' heads in bronze, into troughs placed at the four comers to receive them. Mr. Gilbert Scott is the architect, and the sculpture has been executed by Mr. Birnie Philip'. From "Illustrated London News", 1869.
