'A vast assemblage of people hailed the passage of the Prince at every important part of the route...[The] procession...entered the hall in the following order: The officers and members of the Leeds Town Council...the Mayors of Dewsbury, Richmond, Shrewsbury, Hull, Salford, Wakefield, Ripon, Halifax, Pontefract, Bradford, Middlesborough, Beverley, and Doncaster; the Lord Mayors of London and York; the members of Parliament for the West Riding and for the borough...the Bishops of Ripon and Hereford; the architect, Mr. Gilbert Scott; the superintendents of departments and officers of the local committee, vice-presidents, representatives of the London committee, of the Committee of Council on Education, and of the contributors; the executive committee; the Prince of Wales and suite ; the General in command of the distinct and staff; the officers in command of the Royal Horse Artillery, of the Rifle Brigade, and of the escort, with many noblemen and gentlemen of Yorkshire...About five o'clock a heavy thunderstorm broke over the town and scattered the waiting crowd'.
