Prince Alfred in Australia: the Gawler Corporation presenting their address to the Duke, 1868. Engraving of a photograph by Mr. T. Duryea. 'A guard of honour, consisting of three volunteer companies, about 160 in strength, under Major Clark, took up a position to the south of the arch, with the Gawler band. At three o'clock the procession was seen coming down South- terrace, preceded by a guard of cavalry. The Friendly Societies and German Club passed the arch and formed on both sides of the roadway beyond. As his Royal Highness approached, the Royal Standard was run up on the arch; and as he turned into King William-street a cheer of welcome rose from a thousand voices, the guard presented arms, and the band struck up the National Anthem'.
