Testimonial to Sir John Fife, from the 1st Newcastle Rifle Volunteers, 1869. 'The gentlemen of the 1st Newcastle Rifle Volunteer Corps have presented a testimonial to their late commander, Lieutenant-General Sir John Fife, whose ill-health has obliged him to retire. It was conveyed to him, with a suitable address, by Major Redmayne, Captains Smith and Doeg, and Quartermaster Lockerby. There were 200 subscribers to the testimonial; the gift was an elegant centre-piece, of Grecian design, from the establishment of Lister and Sons, Mosley-street, Newcastle. The cost of the piece was £100. The "address" was handsomely engrossed and illuminated on vellum. The principal features of the "address" was the monogram " J. F." in the centre, and the Newcastle coat of arms on the top'. From "Illustrated London News", 1869.
