The Abyssinian Expedition: General Sir Robert Napier's camp at Adigerat, 1868. Engraving of a sketch by 'Count Seckendorff, a distinguished officer of the Guards in the Prussian Army, who accompanies the headquarters of this expedition...The Illustration...represents the camp of Adigerat. The flagstaff on the right indicates General Sir R. Napier's head-quarters; and that on the left marks the place of the commissariat stores. The camp falls due west, overlooking the village of Adigerat and the semi-ruinous fortress which is depicted in the background on the right'. General (later Field Marshal) Robert Napier of the British Indian Army led the punitive expedition to Abyssinia in July 1867, defeating the Emperor Tewodros II of Ethiopia with minimal loss of life among his own forces, and rescuing the hostages of Tewodros.
