The Duke of Edinburgh starting for a kangaroo-hunt, Campbell-House Station, Lake Albert, South Australia, 1868. Engraving from a photograph '...representing the party about to start...The Prince and a small party went up on the north side of the peninsula and had some good sport, bringing several kangaroos into camp...one kangaroo was ridden down and caught by the tail, without the assistance of the dogs...The Prince...had a capital day's sport; one particularly large kangaroo fell to the gun of his Royal Highness, who stalked him in first-rate style, and shot him full in the breast. Our dinner consisted of kangaroo- tail soup, fish from the lake, wild turkey, wombat, and other meats, which we all seemed to enjoy...His Royal Highness is a thorough and able sportsman, and enjoyed himself all the time we were out. He rides well, and was on horseback nearly the whole time; he roughed it with the best bushmen amongst us, and was never in the slightest degree put out. The game shot and killed by the party was considerable, both in quantity and variety, and the largest share of spoil was that of the Prince.' From "Illustrated London News", 1868.
