Visit of the Prince and Princess of Wales to Liverpool: departure of their Royal Highnesses from the Prince's Landing-Stage, 1865. 'An immense crowd of people all along the line of procession hailed the Prince and Princess [the future King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra] with the heartiest acclamations...The Royal party, being bound for a cruise on the river, reached the Prince's Landing-stage...and were received by the Mayor (Mr. Lawrence). Their approach to the stage was welcomed with enthusiastic cheering, and the artillery volunteer corps...presented arms, while the band played "God bless the Prince of Wales"...Their Royal Highnesses embarked on board the saloon-steamer Woodside...[There were] a large number of vessels of all shapes and sizes, decked with the gayest colours'.
