Women Standing by the Sea, 1933. Thirties fashion: bell-bottomss, spots and stripes. Trousers for western women are in. After the first world war, there were a few famous examples of women donning trousers. Hollywood stars such as Marlene Dietrich and Katharine Hepburn were known for their androgynous style in the 1930s. Yet, despite their increasing popularity, trousers weren't considered acceptable women's attire until the 1970s. Based on Deuteronomy 22:5 in the Bible ("The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man"), some religious groups still believe that women should not wear trousers.
