'The United States [turned] out to give a real American welcome to a distinguished visitor...the object of their affections was a Frenchman, 81-year-old Georges Clemenceau...anybody who had had anything to do with winning the [First World] war or carving up Europe at the peace conference was automatically 'tops'. They stood for something solid to cling to in an age of growing uncertainty'.
