'Allied sea power fought it out with German air power...the Royal Navy bore a defeated Allied Expeditionary Force across the North Sea to Britain, and in the crossing learned, yet again, that sea power alone is not enough. To outwit the Stukas [ie German planes], "hard a'port, and then hard a'starboard", hour upon hour, twisting and turning for dear life'.
