Mr. Pendlebury, Senior Wrangler, 1870. Engraving from a photograph by Mr. G. L. Collis of Richard Pendlebury, the Senior Wrangler [top mathematics undergraduate at the University of Cambridge]. 'Mr. Pendlebury's abilities were tested on four occasions in the University local examinations. On the first occasion, in June, 1860, when only thirteen years old, he was placed in the first class of the junior division. On the second occasion...he gained a first-class place in the junior division at the Cambridge examinations, and distinguished himself also in mathematics. In 1862, when fifteen years old, he was placed third in the aggregate list (senior division) in the Oxford examinations, and first in the mathematical list. In 1864 he was...bracketed first on the aggregate for the whole kingdom in the senior division of the Oxford examinations. In 1866 he matriculated at St. John's College, Cambridge, when he was placed first in the examination...On passing his second B.A. examination at London University, in November, 1869, he obtained a first class and the University scholarship for mathematics, value £50 per annum. Rarely, indeed, has a more brilliant career than this been recorded of any University student'. From "Illustrated London News", 1870.
