Greek brigands brought prisoners to Athens, 1870. 'The murder of the English gentlemen, Messrs. Herbert, Vyner, and Lloyd, and the Italian Count de Boyl, by the brigands of Attica, who captured them on the road between Athens and Marathon, is fresh in the memory of our readers...Takos Arvanitaki and nine other brigands escaped the pursuit of the Greek cavalry at Schimitari, but...were afterwards caught. Three of the malefactors - namely, Photis Georgiou, sometimes called Economos, the supposed murderer of Mr. Lloyd; Costas Agraphiotos, said to have been once a monk; and Pericles Lioris - appear in the [engraving], their photographs having been taken when they were brought for trial, with the soldiers by whom they were guarded...the prisoners were all found guilty, and all condemned to death...It is said that Takos Arvanitaki and his six brothers are not Greeks, but Wallachs of Thessaly. They were formerly employed by the Greek Government to aid the irregular invasion of the Turkish provinces; and they have since kept up a correspondence with active partisans at Athens. This is but one of the bands of robbers, kidnappers, and murderers infesting different parts of Greece. It is to be hoped that the example made of these will deter the others'.
