'...the leading member of the most popular Government France has for a great number of years possessed...We are not aware that M. Ollivier has much private fortune, but, besides his allowance as deputy, he has for a number of years been counsel in Paris of the Pacha of Egypt in the affairs of the Isthmus of Suez - an office which brought him in 30,000 f. per annum, and which he may now have to resign...What pleases in M. Ollivier, and must largely contribute to make him an exceedingly popular Minister, is the simplicity and frankness of his manners and the kindliness his countenance expresses'.
