Lecture to working men on ornamental ironwork at the South Kensington Museum, [London], 1870. 'A series of six Monday evening lectures is being delivered, in the lecture-theatre of the South Kensington Museum, by Mr. J. M. Capes, M.A. of Balliol College, Oxford, to a large audience of working artisans and others, upon the subject of ornamental ironwork, and the artistic treatment of that metal in its manufacturing processes, especially of forged or wrought iron. The South Kensington Museum now possesses a collection of the metal-work, both English and foreign, of the best periods of the past, unrivalled in England and probably in Europe. A large selection from these works is exhibited in the theatre, and is exployed [sic] by Mr. Capes in illustration of his lectures, comprising examples of screens, gates, window frames, railings, gratings, brackets, candlesticks, panels, balconies, hinges, locks, knockers, and other articles. The lectures include a complete account of the processes of forging, welding, riveting, filing, chiselling, and interlacing, employed in the examples exhibited; together with explanations of the only sound principles of construction and decoration suitable for metal-work in its various kinds'.
