'After lying in state one day at the Portland City Hall, the coffin was removed for conveyance to the little town or village of Peabody, in Massachusetts, where it was to be finally deposited in the family vault...The coffin was borne in procession to the Eastern Railway station, and conveyed by special train to Peabody or South Danvers, near Salem, fifteen miles north of Boston. In that village, which is the birthplace of George Peabody, and has taken his name, stands the Peabody Institute, founded and endowed by a small portion of his bounty...Here was his body laid in state, to be visited by his fellow-citizens with every token of affectionate regard, till the 8th February, the day appointed for its consignment to the vault where he had buried his mother, at the Memorial Church he had built upon the occasion of her death. The concluding funeral ceremony...was preceded by the delivery of an eloquent oration by Dr. Robert C. Winthrop, on the virtuous example of the deceased...So the benefactor of the London poor was left to his repose in his quiet native village'. From "Illustrated London News", 1870.
