The Earl of Dalkeith, President of the Scott Centenary Festival, Edinburgh, 1871. Engraving from a photograph by Messrs. James Russell and Sons. 'The Right Hon. Walter Francis, titular Earl of Dalkeith, is the eldest son and heir of the present Duke of Buccleuch, by a daughter of the second Marquis of Bath. Lord Dalkeith was born in 1831, and married, in 1857, Lady Louisa Hamilton, third daughter of the Duke of Abercorn, and has issue, the eldest of whom is Walter Francis, Lord Eskdale. In 1856 he was attached to the special mission to Russia, on the coronation of Alexander, reigning Emperor. In the same year he was created Lieutenant-Colonel of the Mid-Lothian Yeomanry Cavalry, He is Lord Lieutenant of Dumfriesshire and Deputy Lieutenant for the county of Selkirk. He represented the county of Edinburgh in the House of Commons, on Conservative principles, from June, 1853, till the general election in December, 1868, when he was opposed, in the Liberal interest, by Sir Alexander Maitland, and defeated, since when he has not appeared prominently in public life'.
