The Red River Expedition: camp at Malawin [sic] Bridge, 1871. Scene from the British military expedition to quash the Riel Rebellion at the Red River Settlement in modern-day Manitoba: "to put down the revolt of the French-Indian half-castes..., on the annexation of this territory to the Canadian Dominion". Engraving of a sketch by Captain Huyshe, depicting '...the headquarters camp at the Matawan [ie Matawin] Bridge, before the start from Shebandowan...The starting-point for the longest and most difficult part of the route was Lake Shebandowan, which is situated near the confluence of the Matawan and Shebandowan rivers, about fifty miles inland from the western shore of Lake Superior...The force under Sir Garnet Wolseley numbered about 1200 fighting soldiers, of whom two thirds were Canadian militia, and the remainder were regular troops... The expedition was organised and directed by Lieutenant-General the Hon. James Lindsay, Commander- In-Chief in Canada'. From "Illustrated London News", 1871.
