The Moated Grange, drawn by S. Read, 1871. Illustration for "Mariana", a poem by Alfred Lord Tennyson - engraving of a painting '...now at the South Kensington Museum...As Tennyson says: "The broken sheds looked sad and strange, Unlifted was the clinking latch; Weeded and worn the ancient thatch Upon the lonely, moated grange". We see it all in the poet's description; but how well the Artist has rendered this scene in the drawing we have engraved!'. From the Christmas supplement to "Illustrated London News", 1871.
