Portrait of a Young Man with a Ruff, mid-1620s. Additional Info: A young man engages the viewer with a forthright gaze from within the confines of a small oval. Strong light from the left evenly illuminates his dark eyes and curly hair, upturned blonde mustache, and trimmed beard. It dances over his fashionable attire to reveal the split shoulder decoration of his black doublet with its row of metal buttons down the chest, and casts the sitter’s shadow against the gray background, lower right. The swirls of the sitter’s pleated white ruff (fraise à la confusion) encompass and present his visage for scrutiny.
