As the soldiers and crowd move off in the distance and passersby point up toward Christ's ravaged body, the Virgin, Saint John, and Mary Magdalene take a moment for quiet sorrow. Transparent angels appear in the blue clouds, suggesting the heavenly preparation for Christ. This miniature of the Crucifixion faces a text devoted to the Virgin's sorrow and compassion at her son's death.
